Math Consultant

 

SUMMARY

The primary role of the Math Consultant is to positively impact student achievement by providing coaching, training, support, and resources to Marquette-Alger RESA school districts in the implementation of high quality curriculum, instruction and assessment in the area of Mathematics. The Math Consultant will partner with teachers in providing job-embedded professional learning opportunities. Through robust, positive professional relationships with teachers, administrators, and MISTEM partner organizations,  the Math Consultant will support staff in developing knowledge, skills, and capacity to create and enhance positive learning experiences for all students.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Current Michigan Teaching Certification
  • A minimum of five (5) years of classroom experience teaching mathematics
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership, mathematics instruction, planning/evaluation, and curriculum development 
 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Mathematics/Mathematics Education OR Master’s degree in Teaching, Educational Leadership, or Curriculum with evidence of focused study in mathematics/mathematics education 
  • Prior experience as a mathematics consultant
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and facilitating adult learning
  • Demonstrated skills in consultation, coaching, training, and group facilitation
  • Proven success with deployment of systemic initiatives to positively impact the teaching and learning environment
  • Thorough knowledge of mathematics assessments, including large-scale standardized assessment, interim benchmark assessment, and high-quality classroom assessment practices
 

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to use observational data and formative assessments to guide professional learning and coaching
  • Ability to integrate emerging forms of technology into professional activities and public presentations
  • Ability to develop positive and supportive relationships with classroom teachers, administrators, and staff
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Must effectively orchestrate multiple activities/projects simultaneously to accomplish goals, use resources effectively, and maintain proactive communication with stakeholders
  • Must demonstrate a high degree of organization and efficient time management
  • Must successfully adapt/function independently within a variety of school districts
  • Proficiency in computer/software use including Google Suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Work cooperatively with the Deputy Superintendent and other content area consultants to plan professional learning for teachers, teaching assistants, paraprofessionals and administrators
  • Organize, develop, support, and deliver professional learning, coaching, and consultation in the area of K-12 mathematics curriculum, instruction, and assessment in Marquette-Alger RESA local districts
  • Provide consultation on research and evidence-based techniques and curricula for students’ learning of mathematics, including the use of Essential Instructional Practices in Early Mathematics
  • Work with instructional staff within districts to implement appropriate materials, teaching techniques, and interventions for all students in the area of mathematics
  • Analyze, interpret and effectively assess strengths and opportunities for growth 
  • Lead the following regional initiatives: Math Curriculum Committee; the implementation of Number Corner; and the establishment of advocacy and professional learning efforts such as an Early Math Leadership Institute.
  • Establish positive and productive professional relationships with all Agency and local district educators, as well as local partner organizations such as the Seaborg Math and Science Center
  • Encourage the teaching of mathematics across academic disciplines with a focus on the use of math-based skills in real world applications
  • Design and facilitate collaborative, job-embedded, standards-based professional learning opportunities aligned with the Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) model and the Michigan K-12 standards for mathematics
  • Assist in the collection of data, its analysis and its use to inform instructional decisions at the student, classroom, school, and system level regarding instruction, curriculum use, and tiered support to improve student outcomes
  • Provide support in the use of state, regional, and local data and assessments
  • Employ data conferencing with individual teachers/administrators and teams of teachers
  • Assist and lead Marquette-Alger RESA districts in planning and implementing curriculum, instruction, and assessment priorities in mathematics aligned with Michigan K-12 standards and School-wide/Area-wide Practices
  • Support districts to implement math goals through Michigan Integrated Continuous Improvement Process (MICIP)
  • Model the principles of continuous learning, problem-solving, and team building, as well as the ability to learn new technologies and instructional practices on an ongoing basis
  • Provide leadership in the area of instructional best practices
  • Expand teachers’ use of a variety of resources, including technology, to improve instruction
  • Assist in the development and implementation of formative and summative assessments
  • Remain current on research and effective practices of curriculum instruction, assessment, school development, and school improvement, as well as professional learning in the field of public education and in the area of mathematics
  • Provide leadership and assist in coordinating programs/services such as summer programs and community trainings
  • Manage reporting and evaluation related to the position
  • Provide information to local districts regarding state and federal initiatives and legislation
  • Serve as Marquette-Alger RESA representative to national, state, and local mathematics organizations; Michigan Department of Education; and local school district mathematics liaisons
  • Perform other duties as assigned
 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

  • Must keep the affairs of Marquette-Alger RESA and LEAs confidential at all times
  • Must use sound professional judgment and act effectively to carry out the functions of this position within the direction provided by Marquette-Alger RESA mission, goals, and strategic plan, and the MISTEM Strategic Plan
  • Meet the requirements and follow the guidelines specified by any grants or other funding sources supporting/associated with the position.
  • Position routinely requires travel to local school districts in Marquette and Alger counties, as well as possible assignments within other counties in the Upper Peninsula; Requires occasional travel to other areas of the State


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full time position. Must have regular and reliable job attendance, performance, and the physical ability to do the job
