Teacher Consultant for Students with Visual Impairments

SUMMARY:
The Teacher Consultant (TC) for Students with Visual Impairments provides direct and indirect services to students who are blind, low vision, or visually impaired. The TC may teach Braille reading and writing; and adaptive devices and technology related to Braille, low vision, and activities of daily living. The TC evaluates students, and develops/carries out IEP goals. This position’s responsibilities include a wide variety of classroom settings, student ages, and experiences. The TC will have the opportunity to work with many different people, school districts, and systems.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in Visual Impairment
  • Training and experience in programming for students with disabilities (including students with visual impairments.)
  •  Demonstrated ability to effectively develop and maintain relationships
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with experience in report writing and record keeping
  • Knowledge of special education laws, rules and regulations and Individual Education Plans including transition plan development and implementation
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to involve families, teachers, administrators, and community agencies in effectively implementing programs and services for visually impaired students
  • Computer Literate


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • State approval as a Teacher Consultant for the Visually Impaired
  • Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist
  • Previous school experience working with students with special needs
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with parents/guardians, local school districts, teachers, administration, and community partners to provide a continuum of supports for students

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide direct and consultative services, including orientation and mobility support, to students identified as blind, low vision or visually impaired.
  • Direct services may include adjusted academic support; personal adjustment instruction; consulting; and prevocational education to optimize the educational experience for each student
  • Assist in the identification, evaluation, educational placement, and instruction of students with visual impairments
  • Evaluate educational programs and recommend adjustments to enable participation of students with visual impairments
  • Assist families in understanding the nature and educational significance of students’ visual impairments
  • Assist regular education, vocational education, and special education teachers, teacher consultants and ancillary personnel in programming for students
  • Assist teachers by acquiring adaptive materials, helping plan for curriculum modifications, and providing direct
  • Braille instruction to meet the instructional needs of visually impaired learners
  • Adapt school and classroom environment, tools and materials for the purpose of improving student functioning and facilitating student access to curricular and instructional activities
  • Coordinate with community agencies and resources, including medical specialties, to facilitate information, services, and transition that will support the family and child, and that are complementary to educational programs
  • Assist educational entities in determining professional development needs of staff related to serving students with visual impairments, and facilitate professional development opportunities when appropriate
  • Proactively contribute as an interdisciplinary team member within the context of an IEP, including development, planning, implementation, and follow-up
  • Provide appropriate diagnostic testing, identify student capabilities, and monitor student progress using assessments and observations
  • Prepare progress reports, educational records, IEP forms, classroom observation records, and other documents as appropriate
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, agency, and district policies
  • Educate family members and caregivers on different intervention strategies
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with community agencies, administrators, educators, physicians, families, and students
  • Perform other duties as assigned

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency in computer/software use including Google Suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom
  • Demonstrated experience exercising confidentiality and sound judgment in dealing with local districts, staff, students, and operations
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously, work independently, and maintain proactive communication with stakeholders
  • Ability to deal with issues in a fair manner, treat diverse populations and personalities with dignity and respect, and act in a highly ethical manner
  • Professional appearance; professional and positive attitude

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

  • Must keep the affairs of Marquette-Alger RESA and LEAs confidential at all times
  • Must exercise confidentiality and sound judgment in dealing with families, children, physicians, and staff Must demonstrate excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Must effectively orchestrate multiple activities/projects simultaneously to accomplish goals and use resources effectively
  • Must be organized, self-motivated and enthusiastic
  • Must successfully adapt/function independently within a variety settings
  • Position routinely requires regional travel in Marquette and Alger counties
  • Occasional travel to other areas of the State may be required

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, academic-year position starting in July 2024. Must have regular and reliable job attendance, performance, and the physical ability to do the job
