POSITION SUMMARY:
The Consultant for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) will play a critical role in supporting statewide outreach activities to meet the needs of Michigan students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, along with their educators, administrators, and families. The Consult position is field-service based, requiring remote and in-person work with schools, families, and students. Position location is Lansing area.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possess a valid Michigan Teaching certificate with an SL endorsement (DHH), or equivalent
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience as a teacher or teacher consultant of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
- Demonstrated knowledge of Federal and State of Michigan laws, regulations, and rules in Special Education
- Demonstrated knowledge of DHH resources
- Experience supporting families and schools using all evidenced-based philosophies, approaches, and languages for students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing
- Demonstrated knowledge of hearing loss, hearing aids, cochlear implants, and Hearing Assistive Technology (HAT)
- Demonstrated ability to communicate using American Sign Language
- Experience in collaboration/outreach with the Deaf/Hard of Hearing community
- Demonstrated ability to communicate at all levels with parents, school administrators, teachers and staff members
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of technology
- Demonstrated ability to work/contribute as a team member.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collect, review, and analyze data related to DHH needs in Michigan
- Develop strategies to support DHH needs statewide
- Coordinate/organize workshops, conferences, events in response to needs assessments, evidence-based practices, and input from the field
- Support and consult with districts and parents related to DHH educational issues
- Collaborate with, and act as liaison to, MDE offices, outside agencies, collaborative partners, and stakeholders in matters involving the needs of students who are DHH, and the field overall
- Identify additional statewide DHH needs
- Keep Michigan Department of Education and Low Incidence Outreach/DHH web pages and information up-to-date
- Provide or arrange for presentations as needed/requested
- Serve as a liaison for state and national DHH organizations
- Contribute and work as a team member of the Low Incidence Outreach team
- Perform other duties as assigned
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full time position beginning February 3, 2025, or as soon as practicable thereafter. Must have regular and reliable job attendance, performance, and the physical ability to do the job.
REPORTS TO: Michigan Deparntment of Education Low Incidence Outreach Coordinator
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: Salary range $89,00 - 97,000 based on qualifications / experience. Health insurance package and Michigan school employees' retirement benefits offered.
